South Carolina is home to three official dances. The Carolina Shag is the official state dance of South Carolina. It was designated as the official state dance of South Carolina in 1984. The state folk dance is the square dance. Square Dance is an American folk dance that is called, cued, or prompted in its steps. It became the official state folk dance in 1994. The Richardson Waltz is the official state waltz. This became official in 2000. See the link below for more information on these dances.

We are excited to continue the Spartanburg District 1 Dance program this year as we welcome Ally Flagg to our faculty of amazing Dance educators! After just one year of a pilot program, District 1 is now offering dance for a longer period of time at each elementary school and added an additional teaching position for Dance. Please welcome Ally as you see her across the SD1!
Check out this history of National Tap Dance Day and how it became an official holiday through Congress! We will be celebrating by learning some new tap steps in Dance class at IIS and IES! Excited to share my love of tap with students!
